I grew up in Sedgefield, a small farming village in the North East of England, and received my first degree in Languages from the University of Leeds. My passion for languages and travel took me to Europe, and I have taught English in Spain and Italy to children of all ages.

On my return to the UK, I chose to develop my language skills further by studying for a Masters degree at the University of Newcastle Upon Tyne. During this time I taught Spanish part time to adults in the local area. I missed working with young learners, but realized my passion was with teaching and decided to gain Qualified Teacher Status. Since then, I have taught Spanish and French in a rural high school, an inner city school in Yorkshire and an all girl's school in Gloucestershire before my move to Chicago. Learning another language is an important skill for young people to master and I enjoy motivating and inspiring learners to study languages.

International communication is an essential part of my role. In the UK I worked as an 'International Coordinator' developing links with schools in Spain and France, and enabling my school to receive the British Council's International School Award. Here at the BSC as well as developing email links with Spain, I have organized field trips for the High School students to both Costa Rica and Montreal. These were exciting learning opportunities for the students to bring to life what they had learnt in the classroom. Our now annual ‘Languages Week’ also gives students throughout the school the opportunity to learn about a new language and culture.

This is my second year as Departmental Leader for the Languages Department here at BSC. I look forward to continuing to develop the languages program and inspiring our learners, along with the dedicated team of linguists in the department.
