Mr. A. Macpherson
Head of Upper School Learning, Mathematics

I grew up in Saltash, a small town in Cornwall, in the far south west of England. I attended both primary and secondary school there before moving on to university in Bristol, where I received a Bachelor of Education degree specialising in Mathematics teaching. After university I took up a post at Torquay Boys' Grammar School, where I worked for six years, teaching Key stage 3, in addition to GCSE and A-level. Aside from Mathematics I also taught Geography, IT and Computing at a variety of Key Stages. During my time there I had a number of different responsibilities aside from teaching, the most significant being in dealing with the university admissions process.
I left Torquay in the summer of 2000 and joined the British School of Washington, which was at the time in its third year of existence. In my six years there a great deal has changed. I was instrumental in the development of the senior school working to develop a successful GCSE and IB programme. I guided the school through the IB accreditation process. We had our first ever graduating class in the summer of 2005, which was a real milestone in the development of the school. One of the areas that I have worked extensively in over the past few years here is the university admissions process for the USA, and other parts of the world, to follow on form my previous experience with the UK system. I have visited many universities around the US and Canada.
I am very excited to be taking up my position at the British School of Chicago.
The school has reached an exciting stage in its history, and I intend to develop the senior section of the school to follow on from what is already in place with the younger years.
