Design Technology
Through the IPC the children learn to understand the effects of technology on people's lives. The children are given opportunities to use a range of materials and components to design and make products to solve problems and meet needs. When the product is completed the children evaluate their methods and materials.
During Key Stage 1 the children aged 5 to 7 years will learn:
- To plan in pictures and words what they are going to make.
- To comment on their own plans and products and suggest areas of improvement.
- To use simple tools and materials to make products.
- To comment on the usefulness of products in everyday use.
During Key Stage 2 the children aged 7 to 11 years will learn:
- To design and make products to meet specific needs taking into consideration the needs of the user.
- To make useable step by step plans.
- To make and use labelled sketches as designs.
- To use simple tools and equipment with some accuracy and understand that different techniques, tools and materials are needed for different tasks.
- To test and evaluate and identify and implement improvements to their designs and plans.
- To suggest improvements to products in everyday use.
- To know that technology affects people’s lives.
- To gather and use information to suggest solutions to problems.
- To investigate the way in which simple products in everyday use are designed and made and how they work.
