History
The main focus of the History element of the IPC is to learn about the past in relation to the present and how the present is a direct result of what people have done in the past. The children will learn about the lives of peoples in the past and the cultural, political, social, economic and personal aspects of past societies and the way in which past societies have affected each other. The children will find out different ways of learning about the past learning about cause and effect. They will also find out the different ways the past has been recorded and interpreted and how to draw their own conclusions from their research.
During Key Stage 1 the children aged 5 to 7 years will learn:
- About a range of people who have lived in a variety of cultures in the past.
- About a range of events that have happened in the past.
- To order events and objects into a sequence.
- To identify differences between their own lives and those of people who have lived in the past.
- To find out aspects of the past from a range of sources of information.
- To communicate their historical knowledge and understanding in a variety of ways.
During Key Stage 2 the children aged 7 to 11 years will learn:
- The study of history is concerned with the past in relation to the present.
- To understand that the past can be considered in terms of different time periods and that it can be recorded in a variety of different ways.
- The main events, dates, and characteristics and similarities and differences of the past societies they have studied.
- To give reasons for particular events and changes, and answer questions about the past and about changes.
- To find out about aspects of the past using a range of sources.
- The general history of the host country.
- To understand the ideas, beliefs, attitudes and experiences of people in the past.
- To enquire into historical issues and their effects on people’s lives.
- To understand the social, cultural, religious and ethnic diversity of the periods they have covered.
- To describe and identify reasons for and results of historical events, situations and changes in the periods they have studied.
- To be able to place the events, people and changes in the periods they have studied into a chronological framework.
- To understand that historical sources can be different from and contradict one another and that they reflect their context of time place and viewpoint.
