The School

Year 5 students in music classThe British School of Chicago provides British curriculum education for children of all nationalities. The school is a wholly owned subsidiary of World Class Learning Ltd., opened in September 2001, and has sister schools in Washington, D.C., Boston, Houston, and Charlotte.

At present the school accepts children from 3 years old to 18 years old (Nursery to Year 13) (Pre-school to Grade 12). 

Nursery and Reception (Foundation Stage for ages 3-4 or 5) children follow the Foundation Curriculum, based on the UK Early Learning Goals/Stepping Stones. The focus is on helping children develop skills and attitudes they will need as a foundation to a lifetime of learning.

All children at the British School of Chicago ages 5 or 6 to 11, Years 1-6, follow the National Curriculum for England. This means they follow nationally agreed programmes of study in English, Mathematics, Science, Design & Technology (DT), Information & Communication Technology (ICT), History, Geography, Modern Foreign Languages, Art & Design, Music, Physical Education (PE) and Personal, Social & Health Education (PSHE). It is school policy to assess all children following entry into the school and to monitor their progress using both a formal and informal structure which include standardised assessment tests.

The school is a member of the Council of International Schools in the Americas (CISTA), the National Independent Private Schools Association (NIPSA), the Independent Schools Associates of Chicago (ISACS) and the Lake Michigan Associates of Independent Schools.
